“Will Your Star Players Shine or Stumble? Analyzing the Top Breakout Candidates and Potential Busts for the 2024-2025 Season”

The fantasy football season is finally here, and everyone’s eyes are on their top players to see who will carry their team to victory. In this article, we categorize the top players from each team in the league into two categories: potential breakouts who could exceed expectations and potential busts who might underperform. Let’s dive in and see who’s ready to shine and who could stumble out of the gate.

Team: Sneaky

Owner: Jayme Moten

  • Breakout Candidate: Jalen Hurts (QB, PHI) Hurts is coming off a strong season and has the potential to break into the elite tier of fantasy quarterbacks. His dual-threat ability makes him a weekly must-start with high upside.
  • Potential Bust: Saquon Barkley (RB, PHI) Barkley has immense talent, but with injury history and an Eagles offense with a lot of weapons, there’s some risk that Barkley might not deliver the elite numbers expected of him every week.

Team: B.A. Got That Dope

Owner: Brandon Zylstra

  • Breakout Candidate: DeVonta Smith (WR, PHI) Smith has shown flashes of brilliance and with another year of chemistry with Jalen Hurts, he’s poised to have a breakout season. His route-running and big-play ability make him a candidate to outperform expectations.
  • Potential Bust: D’Andre Swift (RB, CHI) Swift is talented but joins a crowded Chicago offense. With the Bears propensity to spread touches, Swift may struggle to see the consistent volume needed to be a reliable fantasy RB1, making him a potential bust candidate.

Team: 38 Beavers

Owner: Reid Johnson

  • Breakout Candidate: Alvin Kamara (RB, NO) Kamara is one of the best pass catching backs in the league. If he can stay healthy and see a resurgence in the running game, Kamara will remind everyone why he’s a top-tier fantasy option.
  • Potential Bust: Joe Burrow (QB, CIN) Burrow is one of the best QBs in the league when healthy. With a shaky offensive line again in Cincinnati, there’s a chance he might not reach the expected productivity; especially if the Bengals struggle to protect him.

Team: The 98 Mud Dogs

Owner: Jonny Degeest

  • Breakout Candidate: Breece Hall (RB, NYJ) Hall showed immense potential before his injury last season, and if he returns to form, he could be one of the top running backs in fantasy football. His ability to break big plays makes him a potential breakout candidate.
  • Potential Bust: George Pickens (WR, PIT) Pickens is an elite talent but finds himself in a tricky breakout situation. The Steelers added Arthur Smith as OC and expected to lean heavy on the run. He will have to make the most of every opportunity he gets with Russell Wilson or Justin Fields running the offense.

Team: Poops Rainbows

Owner: Zach Steffl (Chef Jeff)

  • Breakout Candidate: Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR, ARI) Harrison Jr. enters the season with sky-high expectations. He’s a playmaker with all the tools to become a fantasy star right out of the gate. If he lives up to the hype, he could be one of the biggest breakout stars of the year.
  • Potential Bust: David Montgomery (RB, DET) Montgomery will struggle to score as many TDs this year with 2nd year RB Jahmyr Gibbs, being one of the most explosive backs in the league. There’s a risk that Montgomery’s role could be more limited than expected, making him a potential bust.

Team: One Penny Ja’More

Owner: Sam Holmberg

  • Breakout Candidate: Stefon Diggs (WR, HOU) Diggs has been a consistent top performer, but he’s poised to be in an offense with two other great receivers as the Texans continue to lean on their passing attack. Diggs could break out into the absolute top tier of fantasy wide receivers.
  • Potential Bust: Joe Mixon (RB, HOU) Mixon has been a reliable fantasy asset in previous years. But this year he is on a pass heavy Houston offense with lots of mouths to feed. There’s concern that Mixon may not get the volume to deliver the RB1 numbers that managers are expecting.

Team: BBL Drizzy

Owner: Erik Tengwall

  • Breakout Candidate: Drake London (WR, ATL) London has yet to have the breakout season managers have been looking for. This year he’s primed to break out as the Falcons’ top receiving option with addition of Kirk Cousins. His size and skill set give him a high ceiling.
  • Potential Bust: James Cook (RB, BUF) Cook is expected to take on a larger role in the passing game with Diggs in Houston. Also, Josh Allen is one of the best rushing QBs in the league. Cook might not get the goal line touches needed to be a top fantasy running back.

Team: A’mon One

Owner: Ethan Bohlsen

  • Breakout Candidate: Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR, DET) St. Brown has already proven he’s a reliable target, but this could be the year he breaks out as a true fantasy superstar. With Detroit’s offense expected to take another step forward, St. Brown could be in for a monster season.
  • Potential Bust: Chase Brown (RB, CIN) Brown had a solid end to his rookie season and is poised for more touches this year with Joe Mixon gone. The Bengals also signed Zack Moss.If he struggles to get consistent touches in the offense he could be a fantasy liability.

Team: Nacua Matata

Owner: Austin Cuka

  • Breakout Candidate: Deebo Samuel (WR, SF) Samuel is one of the most versatile players in the league, and with the 49ers’ creative offense, he’s poised to have a huge year. If he stays healthy, Samuel could easily break out as a top-5 fantasy wide receiver.
  • Potential Bust: James Conner (RB, ARI) Conner is expected to be the workhorse back in Arizona, but he has missed at least 4 games every season. There’s a risk that Conner could be a volume-dependent bust, especially if Arizona falls behind in games and abandons the run.

Team: Sunday Scaries

Owner: Jacoby Hawkenson

  • Breakout Candidate: Devin Singletary (RB, NYG) Singletary signed a 3 year $16M contract to be the RB1 after the departure of Barkley to the Eagles. If the Giants can move the chains Singletary will benefit and likely will get 15+ touches per game.
  • Potential Bust: Cooper Kupp (WR, LAR) Kupp is one of the best receivers in the game, but with injury concerns and questions who is WR1 in the Rams offense, there’s doubt that Kupp return to his consistent high level of productivity.

Team: Daddy

Owner: Aaron Jenny

  • Breakout Candidate: Christian McCaffrey (RB, SF) McCaffrey is already a fantasy legend, but in San Francisco’s offense, he could break out to levels we haven’t seen before. If he stays healthy, McCaffrey has the potential to be the top overall fantasy player this season.
  • Potential Bust: Kicker Position (NA) Aaron Jenny has voiced his concerns to remove kickers from the league. If he does not roster a kicker this year to prove a point, he runs the risk of losing close games due to an unfilled roster spot.

Team: Buffalos

Owner: Mike McCartney

  • Breakout Candidate: CeeDee Lamb (WR, DAL) Lamb is on the cusp of fantasy superstardom, and this could be the year he breaks out as a top-3 fantasy wide receiver. With Dak Prescott back healthy and Dallas’ offense looking strong, Lamb has the potential for a huge season.
  • Potential Bust: Anthony Richardson (QB, IND) Richardson has incredible potential as a dual-threat quarterback, but only played 3 full games last year. If he struggles to stay healthy again, Mike will be forced to lean on rookie Bo Nix to lead him to the playoffs.

Team: Tank for Caleb

Owner: Adam Essler

  • Breakout Candidate: Jahmyr Gibbs (RB, DET) Gibbs is one of the most exciting rookies entering the league, and his versatility as both a runner and receiver gives him enormous upside. He could quickly become a top fantasy option and a breakout star.
  • Potential Bust: Justin Herbert (QB, LAC) Herbert will be leading a run heavy offense with new coach Jim Harbaugh. The Chargers are also missing a definitive WR1. Josh Palmer and Ladd McConkey will look to fill major roles after Mike Evans and Keenan Allen left in the offseason.

Team: Dreier’s Laundromat

Owner: Joey Dreier

  • Breakout Candidate: Justin Jefferson (WR, MIN)Jefferson is already a top-tier wide receiver, but he has the potential to break out even further into the top overall fantasy player. With Kirk Cousins targeting him heavily and the Vikings’ offense centered around his skills, Jefferson could be in for a massive season.
  • Potential Bust: Aaron Jones (RB, GB) While Jones has been a consistent fantasy performer in previous seasons. The uncertainty surrounding QB Sam Darnold could lead to a dip in his production. Additionally, the presence of Ty Chandler could cut into Jones’s touches, making him a potential bust candidate if he doesn’t see the volume he needs.

Team: The Jack of Harts

Owner: Jack Hartley

  • Breakout Candidate: Amari Cooper (WR, CLE) Cooper has the opportunity to solidify himself as a WR1 this season, especially with Deshaun Watson under center. If Watson returns to his former elite level, Cooper could break out with one of the best seasons of his career, making him a must-start every week.
  • Potential Bust: Derrick Henry (RB, BAL) Henry has been a fantasy monster for years, but with the heavy workload he’s carried and his advancing age, there’s a concern that he might finally start to show signs of wear and tear. If the Ravens struggle offensively or Henry’s efficiency dips, he could underperform relative to his draft cost.

Team: TSW

Owner: Aaron Ruter

  • Breakout Candidate: Bijan Robinson (RB, ATL) Robinson is one of the most dynamic running backs in recent memory. Atlanta is expected to take a step forward offensively with the addition of Kirk Cousins and less run heavy. Robinson has the potential to be RB1 overall on increased efficiency and more touchdowns.
  • Potential Bust: DeAndre Hopkins (WR, TEN) Hopkins has the talent to be a top fantasy receiver, there are concerns about his chemistry with Will Levis and the overall efficiency of the Titans’ passing game. If the offense struggles, Hopkins may not deliver the elite production he’s known for, making him a potential bust candidate.
